Pioneer Pauly — Paul Larouche

Paul Larouche, better known online as Pioneer Pauly, is a Canadian gold prospector, treasure hunter, underwater explorer, and content creator who has turned his passion for searching for gold into one of the prospecting community’s most recognizable online brands. Based in British Columbia, Pauly combines real-world prospecting with humor, storytelling, exploration, and a willingness to go places many people would never consider searching.

From a Teenager With Gold Fever to Pioneer Pauly

Pauly’s interest in prospecting began close to home. A 2026 profile describes how he discovered his first piece of gold in British Columbia’s Sooke River as a teenager. What started as curiosity eventually developed into a career as a modern-day prospector and online creator.

By 2020, Pioneer Pauly had about 215,000 YouTube subscribers. By April 2026, that audience had grown to nearly one million subscribers, with more than 310 million views across 336 videos, according to the Goldstream Gazette.

Not Afraid to Get Wet

One of the things that separates Pioneer Pauly from many traditional prospecting creators is his willingness to search underwater.

Pauly has written about overcoming a serious fear of water and eventually reaching the point where he was comfortable scuba diving in remote prospecting country.

That adventurous approach allows him to investigate places that can be difficult to reach through conventional panning and sluicing.

His content appeals to viewers interested in:

  • Gold prospecting and panning

  • Underwater gold hunting

  • Sniping and bedrock prospecting

  • Metal detecting

  • Crevicing for placer gold

  • Exploring rivers and remote locations

  • Prospecting equipment

  • Treasure hunting and outdoor adventure

Prospecting With Personality

Pioneer Pauly isn't simply an instructional prospecting channel. His personality and unconventional adventures are a major part of the experience.

One day he may be examining bedrock for gold; another adventure might involve diving into a river or heading into remote country in search of a promising location.

That combination of prospecting knowledge, comedy, storytelling and unpredictable exploration has helped him introduce gold hunting to an audience far beyond traditional mining clubs.

A Major Voice in Modern Prospecting

Pauly has become established enough within the industry to work with prospecting brands and organizations. Prospecting-equipment manufacturer Crux lists Pioneer Pauly as a partner/affiliate, alongside creators including Dan Hurd Prospecting and ChrisUndertaking.

The Gold Prospectors Association of America (GPAA) has also published an article written by Pioneer Pauly and directed its readers to his YouTube and Facebook channels.

His influence now extends beyond Canada. A 2026 New Yorker feature examining America's renewed interest in recreational gold prospecting specifically identified Pioneer Pauly as one of the social-media personalities helping fuel modern enthusiasm for the hobby.

Why Follow Pioneer Pauly?

Pioneer Pauly is worth following even though his home territory is British Columbia.

Gold doesn't behave according to state or national borders. Many of the fundamental skills involved in reading rivers, recognizing bedrock traps, crevicing, sampling and understanding how heavy gold moves through waterways are relevant to prospectors throughout the western United States.

Pauly also demonstrates something important for newcomers: prospecting can be serious learning without taking all the fun out of the adventure.

His success shows how the traditional image of a lone prospector with a pan has evolved into something much larger. Today's prospectors use cameras, scuba equipment, metal detectors and social media—but they're still driven by the same question miners have asked for generations:

What's hiding underneath that next rock?
