FREE CA Rockhounding Locations

Here is a list of some of the best free and low-cost California rockhounding destinations for Summer 2026. Always verify current land status and collecting rules before heading out. Casual collection on many BLM lands is generally limited to personal use (up to 25 pounds per day plus one specimen, with annual limits), while National Parks prohibit collecting.

Northern California


American River (Gold Country)

Find: Gold, quartz, jasper, interesting river stones

Near: Auburn, Coloma, Placerville

Why go: Beautiful scenery, easy access, combine with gold panning. Many Mother Lode communities have nearby collecting opportunities.


Cache Creek

Eel River
