Dan Hurd — Dan Hurd Prospecting

3 min read

Dan Hurd is a Canadian prospector, miner, educator, rockhound, and content creator behind the hugely popular Dan Hurd Prospecting channel. Based in British Columbia, Dan has grown from a lifelong recreational prospector into one of the most recognizable personalities in online gold prospecting, with his YouTube audience now well beyond one million subscribers.

From Childhood Gold Panning to Full-Time Adventures

Dan's connection with prospecting began when he was a child. His father took him gold panning along British Columbia's Similkameen River, experiences Dan remembers fondly. Years later, when his own children became interested in outdoor activities, he returned to gold panning and rediscovered his passion for prospecting.

That family hobby eventually developed into Dan Hurd Prospecting, where his adventures now cover far more than gold panning.

His content includes:

  • Gold prospecting and panning

  • Metal detecting for gold

  • Hard-rock and placer mining

  • Rockhounding and mineral collecting

  • Gold-bearing quartz and ore

  • Crevicing and bedrock prospecting

  • Gem and crystal hunting

  • Testing mining and recovery equipment

  • Exploring historic mining areas

  • Teaching viewers how to recognize promising ground

Dan Hurd Comes to California

Dan is particularly interesting to the CA Gold Diggers community because his prospecting adventures have brought him into California's Mother Lode.

His California trips have included prospecting around Mariposa, one of the most historically significant gold-mining regions in the state. A California gold dealer, Bryan Thomas Gold, has documented a 2.6-gram crystalline gold specimen found by Dan during a trip to its Mariposa mine.

California's combination of placer gold, exposed quartz systems, historic workings and mineralized bedrock provides exactly the kind of terrain that makes Dan's prospecting videos interesting.

Gold in Quartz & Specimen Hunting

One of the most exciting aspects of Dan's California adventures is searching for gold still associated with its quartz host rock.

For prospectors accustomed to seeing small flakes at the bottom of a pan, specimen gold provides an entirely different perspective. Instead of gold that has completely weathered from its source and traveled downstream, these specimens can preserve the relationship between the precious metal and the mineralized rock that hosted it.

That makes California specimen hunting particularly exciting for someone like Dan, whose interests overlap gold prospecting, geology, mining and mineral collecting.

More Than a Gold Prospector

Dan's channel has expanded considerably beyond searching for yellow metal. His official site describes his work as gold panning, metal detecting and mining adventures, while his current projects include gold ore, mineralized veins, gemstones, crystals and large-scale rock and mineral projects.

His online store likewise reflects the breadth of his interests, featuring everything from gold and ore specimens to opal, garnets, jade, jasper, thunder eggs and other collectible minerals.

Dan has also contributed to television, books, newspapers and other media. His official site notes appearances or contributions involving British television, BC Studies, news organizations and other creators' channels.

The Teacher Behind the Prospector

One quality that distinguishes Dan from many prospecting creators is his background as an educator.

Before his channel became enormous, Dan was already balancing prospecting and YouTube with his work as a schoolteacher. His educational background shows in the way he approaches prospecting: viewers aren't simply shown a piece of gold—they're often taken through the process of testing, observing, digging, identifying minerals and understanding why a particular location deserves attention.

That combination of education and entertainment has helped make prospecting understandable to people who may never have held a gold pan before.

Why Follow Dan Hurd?

Dan Hurd is an excellent creator to follow because his adventures bring together nearly every part of the treasure-hunting world: gold prospecting, metal detecting, geology, rockhounding, mining, gemstones, equipment and outdoor exploration.

His California adventures are particularly fun to watch because they allow a highly experienced Canadian prospector to tackle the legendary ground that helped create the California Gold Rush.

Dan also demonstrates an important lesson for beginning prospectors: finding gold is only part of the adventure. Learning to understand the rocks, geology and landscape can turn an ordinary trip into an entirely new way of seeing the ground beneath your feet.
