⚠️ CALIFORNIA UNDERGROUND ADVENTURE ALERT — OCT. 12, 2026
🟢 PINNACLES BIG NEWS: Upper Bear Gulch Cave is OPEN! Lower Bear Gulch and Balconies are also open. This is the limited October full-cave window and can change based on bat activity.
🌧️ DESERT FLOOD CAUTION: Tropical Storm Rachel's remnants produced heavy rainfall and flooding across parts of southeastern California and the Southwest. Be extremely cautious around desert caves, washes, mine portals and dirt-road approaches today.
🔥 YOSEMITE: Dome Fire containment has climbed to about 73% and Glacier Point Road has reopened, but the active fire footprint remains closed.
🔴 EASTERN SIERRA: BLM's Rock Fire/Cinder Complex closure near Aberdeen remains ACTIVE.
🔥 GOLD COUNTRY: Mother Lode BLM fire restrictions remain active.
🔥 CALIFORNIA DESERT: BLM seasonal fire restrictions remain scheduled through October 29.
🦇 LAVA BEDS: Six caves remain closed. Blue Grotto's normal seasonal closure approaches its mid-October transition, so watch for a status change.
🦇 CAVES + MINES: Don't carry potentially contaminated underground equipment from an abandoned mine into a cave. Lava Beds and Mitchell Caverns both maintain strong white-nose-syndrome precautions.
This week's practical priority: Pinnacles presents a worthwhile but potentially short-lived access opportunity; Southern California desert underground trips deserve the opposite approach today because of recent heavy rainfall and flash-flood conditions. For every outing, verify the cave status, land closure, road approach and watershed weather separately before going underground.
