🪨 CALIFORNIA ROCKHOUNDING ALERT — OCTOBER 12, 2026
🌧️ SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: Rain and the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel have created flooding and hazardous-road concerns. Avoid desert washes and questionable dirt-road crossings today.
🌊 Coastal flooding and dangerous surf continue along portions of Southern California.
🟢 MARIPOSA/Yosemite: Dome Fire conditions have improved substantially. The fire is approximately 6,788 acres and 73% contained, and Glacier Point Road has reopened.
🔥 FIRE RESTRICTIONS: Don't assume recent rain automatically cancels BLM or Forest Service fire orders. Check the local land-management office.
🚧 EASTERN SIERRA: A wildfire being 100% contained does not automatically mean the affected public land has reopened. Verify Bishop BLM closures before heading toward fire-affected Owens Valley areas.
⚖️ LAW CHECK: No new statewide California rockhounding ban, statewide collecting fee or general new permit requirement was identified this week.
🏞️ Remember: BLM, National Forest, State Park and National Park lands have different collecting rules.
Before heading out: land ownership → mining claims → collecting rules → closure orders → weather → road conditions.
Overall field picture: Southern California gets the strongest caution today because of flooding and backcountry-road conditions. Yosemite/Mariposa conditions are moving in the opposite direction and have improved substantially. The regulatory picture remains comparatively stable; today's meaningful changes are primarily weather, fire recovery and access conditions, not a new rockhounding law.
